Choosing and buying
What does a home battery do?
It stores electricity, for example the surplus from your solar panels during the day, so you can use it yourself later.

Which capacity suits me?
That mainly depends on how much you use in the evening and at night. Do not pick one that is too large.

Plug-and-play or a system with installation?
A plug-and-play battery connects to a wall socket. A system with installation goes on its own circuit.

LFP or NMC: what is inside?
These are two types of lithium-ion cells. Most home batteries use LFP.

Costs, VAT and subsidies
Roughly how much will I spend?
According to Milieu Centraal, an average 6 kWh home battery costs a few thousand euros, including inverter and installation. Our current prices are in the shop.

Is there a subsidy for a home battery?
There is no national subsidy for home batteries. Some provinces have their own scheme, such as Flevoland. Applications for 2026 are closed there and reopen in early 2027. Also check with your own municipality or province.

How much VAT do I pay on a home battery?
21%. The 0% rate applies to solar panels, not to a battery pack or home battery. Reclaiming VAT is only possible under strict conditions.

Will I earn the cost back?
Probably not in the short term. Milieu Centraal expects that you will most likely not earn a home battery back at the moment.

Net metering and contracts
When does net metering (salderen) end?
On 1 January 2027. After that you receive a fee for electricity you feed back. Until 2030 it is at least 50% of the bare supply tariff.

What are feed-in costs?
Costs your supplier charges for processing electricity you feed back. They may only be the costs the supplier incurs for this, and the ACM supervises them.

Does a home battery work with a dynamic contract?
It can, if the battery can charge and discharge based on the price. A benefit is not automatic.
Read more: Home battery and a dynamic contract
Fixed or dynamic contract with a home battery?
It depends on how your battery is controlled. In CE Delft research, total energy costs without net metering were lower with a dynamic contract, or about the same as with a fixed one.
Can it work without solar panels?
Not every battery, but some (larger) home batteries can also be used without solar panels, for example with a dynamic contract.

Can my electric car act as a home battery?
Not really yet. According to Milieu Centraal, an electric car is not yet a home battery on wheels: you can only use its electricity for the car itself, not for appliances in your home.

Connecting, registering and safety
How do I connect a plug-and-play battery safely?
Directly to an earthed wall socket, without an extension cord or power strip, and preferably on a separate circuit.

Do I need to register the battery?
Yes, if its power is 0.8 kW or more. You register a home battery yourself via energieleveren.nl.

Where do I put a home battery?
In a dry, well-ventilated room, not in an escape route or under the stairs. Fit a working smoke detector in the same room.

Does Voltravo also install it?
For selected plug-and-play models you can add single-phase installation on its own circuit for €499 per battery, including VAT.
