What changed on 29 May 2026?
The energy label has had a new design since 29 May 2026 and gives more information about the energy performance of a home. The energy performance of a home is determined with the calculation method NTA 8800.
The RVO example label has a Batterijopslag (battery storage) line under Installaties, with the explanation: "Only batteries of 5 kWh or larger count towards the energy label." (translated from the Dutch).
| When | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 4 June to 2 July 2025 | Internet consultation on a draft amendment of chapter 5 of NTA 8800:2026, with rules for storage of self-generated electricity (internet consultation) | closed, draft text |
| Issued before 29 May 2026 | Existing energy labels remain valid for the time being, up to 10 years (RVO) | valid for now |
| From 29 May 2026 | New energy label design; the example label names battery storage from 5 kWh (RVO, example label) | in effect |
What conditions must the battery meet?
An honest note first: RVO confirms the 5 kWh threshold on the example label. The other conditions below come from the draft text of chapter 5 of NTA 8800:2026, published in an internet consultation that according to the site closed on 2 July 2025. That is not an adopted standard. We could not check whether the adopted text is the same on these points.
Permanently connected. In the draft text, building-related battery systems have a fixed connection to the electrical installation of the building and are connected behind the meter. According to the same text, battery systems with a plug via a wall socket are not building-related.
At least 5 kWh together. The correction factor for batteries is 1 if the storage capacity of all building-related storage systems on the plot together is 5 kWh or more, and 0 otherwise. The text mentions electrical and thermal storage systems.
Self-generated electricity. In the draft text, the credit is only given to the part of the renewable electricity that can be used for the building's own electricity use. A battery without your own generation therefore has nothing to credit in this part. Also read home battery without solar panels.
Does a bigger battery count for more?
Not in the draft text. The correction factor for batteries has only two values there: 0 below 5 kWh and 1 from 5 kWh (NTA 8800:2026, chapter 5, draft). A 15 kWh battery therefore gets no higher battery factor than a 5 kWh one. Choose your capacity on your consumption, not on the label. How to do that is explained in calculating home battery capacity.
How big is the effect on your label?
Limited. In the draft text the correction is in formula 5.14a, with a fixed, policy-based factor of 0.05. The text also says that this factor takes into account that a battery system increases the direct use of self-generated electricity. So it is a small correction to the calculated fossil energy use.
Whether your home moves up a label class as a result depends on how close you are to a class boundary. Only an energy adviser can calculate that for your home. So we do not promise a better label letter.
What does this mean for Voltravo batteries?
The overview below is our reading of the draft text, not a judgement on your home. The energy adviser who prepares the label decides what to include.
| Type | Counts? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-and-play with a plug in the socket, such as the Marstek Venus E 3.0, HYXI Halo, TSUN PowerTrunk, AEG Solarcube and Hoymiles HiBattery | Not according to the draft text | Connected via a wall socket, so not building-related |
| Plug-and-play with a professional installation on a dedicated circuit (option for selected models) | Not established | The draft text speaks of a fixed connection and of plugs. We do not know how an energy adviser assesses this situation |
| Systems with installation of 5 kWh or more together, with solar panels | Possible | Fixed connection behind the meter and above the threshold, provided the adviser takes the capacity into account that way |
| Fixed system of less than 5 kWh together | No | Below the 5 kWh threshold |
Nominal or usable: what does the label look at?
The draft text speaks of storage capacity, without saying whether nominal or usable capacity is meant. That can matter for a small version. According to our product data, the KSTAR BluE-S starts at 5.12 kWh nominal, with 4.6 kWh usable per module. Put such a borderline case to an energy adviser beforehand. More on the difference in calculating home battery capacity.
Is the label a reason to buy a battery?
If you choose a battery mainly for your label, for example because you are going to sell or rent out, then in the draft text only a fixed system of at least 5 kWh together, with solar panels, fits. Even then the effect is limited. Keep the invoice or handover document with the type and capacity, so an energy adviser can assess the battery. A plug-in battery can have other reasons, such as your own consumption, but according to the draft text it does not help your label. More on what a battery does in what is a home battery.
How to connect a plug-in battery is explained in connecting a plug-and-play home battery. On the number of phases, read 1-phase or 3-phase.
Do you have to apply for a new energy label?
Not automatically. An energy label is mandatory, among other cases, on delivery of a new home and on sale or new rental of an existing home. Existing labels remain valid for the time being (up to 10 years) if they were issued before 29 May 2026. A battery can only count once a new label is prepared.
